A Soul Storm at Plantation
Plantation
Tuesday 12th July
For those in the know, this is no ordinary open mic night…
Every Tuesday evening, some of the most talented vocalists and musicians on Bristol’s R&B scene gather at Plantation for an intimate evening hosted by passionate soulster Jay Wilcox.
This week’s session began on an ambient note… it was a warm July evening, friends and couples chattered by candle light over delicious authentic Caribbean cuisine, as smooth soulful synth and vocals drifted through the air.
The night gathered momentum as the musicians upped the energy, playfully improvising covers of some retro classics such as “Sexy Cinderella”, “Wonderwall” and Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”.. infused with their own rich reggae vibe.
Heads started bobbing to bouncy piano loops as cocktails began to flow, and drummer Reginald Chambers was grinning ear to ear, as he thrashed out the rhythms - the way musicians do when they know they’re really in the groove!
Singers and rappers emerged from the audience to perform. The glamorous Tasha set a high standard with her powerful moody velvety vocals, followed by some pro standard rappers, jamming alongside smooth male harmonies and some spirit stirring spoken word poetry.
Arguably best and last performer of the night was from petit Lekayla of just 17. The venue was blown away by the deep soulful lyrics and raw heartfelt power and subtlety flowing effortlessly from such a slight young girl.
It’s rare to find this standard of pure talent at any other night in town, so come and check out the soul storm that’s brewing here at plantation
Expect more of the same every Tuesday from 8.30pm onwards.
