Friday 10th February

The Trish Brown band

The Trish Brown Band has a distinctive style that combines the best of jazz, funk and blues. They are led by Trish who has been described as ‘A singer with a voice that is raw and full of personality’. They have performed at Bristol Acoustic Fest 2012, Aeon 2011 and Bath International Music Festival 2011. She is surrounded by exceptional musicians and is a group not to miss!

'They're plugged in, saucy, swinging. Frontwoman Trish smolders in a power-red wrap around, her almost-scatted vox running smooth against the band's kinetic, neo-soul vibrations.' (Venue, Bristol Acoustic Festival 2012)

Saturday 11th February

Ngaio Anyia & co.

My mum brought me up on the likes of Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and they've shaped who I am, musically. When I'm singing blues and jazz, and occasionally soul, I feel proud to be sharing an art which is in danger of being forgotten. The blues is so much more than a style of music- its shaped all the music that came after it because of its ability to touch the soul and make the hairs on your neck stand up. That's what I love about dubstep and d&b aswell, the excitment that comes with waiting for a drop or the satisfaction of hearing a dirty bassline. The rush of adrenaline that gives you tingles long after the songs finished- that's the most important feeling there is- if this is as far my music ever comes, then that's OK as long as I've re-created that feeling for somebody. Supported by her band.

Baraka

VENUE MAGAZINE - 8th November - "Soon the sunshiney African chiming of Baraka warms the hall, fudgy bass bumping beneath iridescent kora and hand blurring percussion. It's a blue-skied blend of calypso, gentle reggae, jazzy highlife and lilting soca."

BARAKA is a 6 piece band which takes as its inspiration the music of West Africa, South Africa, The Caribbean & Ireland, to produce its own unique and original sound. The result is a heady mix of global beats, intricate rhythms and soaring melodies. Featuring Ben Baddoo on Percussion and Balafon, Paul Bradley on Guitar, Royston Gage on Bass, Mark Bradley on drums,  Brendan Whitmore on Sax and regular guest Modou Cissoko on Kora & Djembe.

BARAKA have recently filmed a cameo for Channel Four's "SKINS", playing the part of an African band backing a gospel choir. As well as writing a song for one of the featured characters to sing, BARAKA wrote, arranged and performed the gospel song featured in the episode. The programme was shown in February 2010 in the UK.
